This week’s episode is in response to a request from Brazil to assist a customer in ERP package selection. The first point I make when approaching such a question is asking the customer to be clear about what problem they are trying to solve.
It is likely customers are hoping to solve problems in all three of these domains, and an ERP implementation project will certain have an impact upon them all! But clarity, including prioritization of the critical problems is important in making the decision.
The area I am most consistently disappointed in is Data. For many financial processes, particularly in the General Ledger area, very little data is entered into the ERP package; finance in many respects is a data-reactive function–and the ERP package becomes such as well. This is not the space where the vendor offerings shine the brightest.
